Little Britain

The Island of Wight

In the South of England, there is a ‘diamond’ island called the Isle of Wight. Just off the coast of England, the island has golden beaches, a castle and English countryside. The Isle of Wight has been visited by Kings and Queens alike and was the home of Queen Victoria until she passed away in 1901.

Tennyson and Dickens wrote their poetry and novels on the West Coast of the Island and King Charles 1st was imprisoned here in 1647.

The Romans settled on the Island and there are remains of a Roman Villa still to this day. There are many manor houses on the Island set in the countryside which visitors go to throughout the year.

In the summer, the Island is very popular with tourists from all over the world. We have language schools and teenagers come to study and enjoy island life.

The zoo on the island is the home to many tigers and lemurs and is well worth a visit. There is also Seaview Wildlife Encounter and Amazon World; wildlife parks where you can see and feed many exotic animals.

The island has been home to music festivals since the 1960s and even the Beatles wrote about it in one of their songs!!

Please come and visit the beautiful Isle of Wight.

Guernsey Island

Hello and welcome back to Little Britain. Today we will be looking at some islands in the British Isles which are surrounded by sea and beautiful beaches. They make a perfect getaway for the summer holidays.

Guernsey was separated from mainland Europe by rising sea levels in 8000 BC. It is just 20 miles from the coast of France and was considered part of Normandy until it sided with Great Britain in 1204.

The French Poet Victor Hugo made Guernsey his home in 1856-1870 when in exile.

The capital of Guernsey is St. Peter Port and this was bombed and occupied by the Germans in WWII. Half of the population of Guernsey left during the war and then returned after liberation in 1945.

Guernsey has a perfect climate for sports, with surfing, windsurfing and diving being very popular here all year round. There is 100 miles of coastline, making for picturesque walks and views of surrounding islands and the rugged shores.

The fresh seafood is a must try, with beautiful restaurants in the capital right by the seashore. Guernsey has the best of French and English fine dining to cater for all palates.

This place really is a must-see!

Burn’s Night- Scottish Traditions

I want to tell you about a special event in Scotland on the 25th January.

It is called Burn’s Night and is a night of celebration and dancing!!!

Burn’s Night is to commemorate the life of the poet Robert Burns, who was born on the 25th January, 1759.

Burn’s suppers (a late dinner) happen in Scotland and all over the world, where there are Scottish people, even in New Zealand!

Burns suppers may be either formal or informal. Informal suppers typically include haggis, (a traditional Scottish dish), Scotch Whiskey and the recitation of Burns' poetry. The haggis is a very famous Scottish food, it is made from the inside of a sheep, it is very delicious, but not everyone likes it!!

The haggis is accompanied by ‘neeps’ and ‘tatties’, these are turnips (vegetable) and mashed potatoes. They are very good and go well together.

After the supper there is dancing; with traditional Scottish music. This dance is called a Ceilidh (Kay-lee). There can be over 100 people at a Ceilidh and we all dance together. It is so much fun!
